Michigan History

The name of Michigan is derived from the Indian word Michsawgyegan, the meaning of which is the Lake Country.
It is bounded on the north by Lake Superior; on the east by Lakes Huron, St. Clair, and Erie; on the south by Ohio
and Indiana; and on the west by Wisconsin and Lake Michigan; and the extent of its dominion is fifty-six thousand two
hundred and forty-three square miles.
